Overview
On June 23, 2016, the UK voted to leave the European Union (EU), ushering in a period of economic and political uncertainty that persists as the UK seeks to define a new, post-Brexit, relationship with the EU and its other key trading partners. As part of the Brexit process, the UK Government triggered the two-year exit process by invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty in March 2017. The UK was initially scheduled to depart from the EU on March 29, 2019. After subsequent negotiations, the Brexit departure date was delayed and is now set for January 31, 2020. Following the election victory on December 12, 2019, the Conservative Party now holds a majority paving the way for quick Parliamentary approval of Boris Johnson’s Brexit Withdrawal Agreement (concluded in October 2019) in advance of the current January 31 deadline. Johnson’s approach also envisions reaching a comprehensive UK-EU trade agreement before the currently agreed transition period expires on December 31, 2020. Johnson has stated publicly that he will not seek an extension of the transition period beyond December 31, 2020.
