Visa Requirements

U.S. citizen visitors to South Africa for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, short business meetings, or in transit do not require visas in advance. However, non-U.S. citizens attending Trade Winds may need a visa to enter South Africa. Please click here for visa exemptions

Please note, South African immigration authorities will not allow entry unless travellers have two blank, adjoining visa pages in their passport, excluding the last page.  They will also deny entry if passports are not valid for at least six months after arrival.

Medical Requirements

A yellow fever vaccination and a proof of vaccination certificate is required if entering from a World Health Organization (WHO) designated yellow fever country which includes Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria. The certificates, which are valid for 10 years, must be approved by the World Health Organization, and should be administered at a yellow fever approved vaccination center at least 10 days before departure to South Africa. Failure to produce a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate at a South African port of entry could lead to refusal of entry, or quarantine until the traveller’s certificate becomes valid. Even if you are just passing through a yellow fever country you will be required to have a current vaccination.

Anti-malarial medication is also recommended if traveling to Kruger Park or outside of major cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, or Cape Town. Please consult your doctor on appropriate medication and visit the CDC’s how to choose a drug to prevent malaria page or their Malaria Information by country page for more information.

For more information please visit the U.S. State Department South Africa travel page and our FAQ page.

Dining and Entertainment

Tradewinds Restaurant – Sandton Hilton

Locals and guests can enjoy stunning garden views at Tradewinds Restaurant. Savour delicious local and international cuisine from the a-la-carte menu or spoil yourself with their traditional buffet. Unwind during the summer months on the outdoor terrace and take in fresh air and enjoy rich Sandton blue skies.

Walking around Sandton, it's easy to feel that one is in the absolute center of Johannesburg. The suburb buzzes with commercial energy. It's a multisensory experience peppered with expensive real estate, international brands found in Sandton City, pavement cafes and skyscraper buildings that sit side by side with street vendors selling living art made from beads and wire.

  • Take in a show at the Theatre on the Square located on the Nelson Mandela Square.
  • Take a ride through Sandton on a Shesha Tuk
  • Visit Liliesleaf Farm – The headquarters of Umkhonto we Sizwe (military wing of the ANC) in the 1960's. A government raid on Liliesleaf led to the arrest and ultimate imprisonment of Nelson Mandela and many other political activists.

  • Have your photo taken beneath the giant statue of Nelson Mandela on the Square.
