U.S. Commercial Service/Portland, Oregon – Internship Program

The U.S. Commercial Service (USCS) is the primary U.S. export promotion agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. The USCS/Portland office supports businesses in Oregon and Southwest Washington that export. We offer a limited number of part-time volunteer internships to students considering careers in international business.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria for consideration:

1. U.S. citizenship

2. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program full-time or half-time

3. GPA of 3.0 or better

The U.S. Commercial Service assists U.S. companies in helping them develop or expand export sales of U.S. products and services. We help companies assess their export readiness, provide resources and counseling to help them learn the basics of exporting, provide market research on international markets, help them identify and establish contacts with potential international business partners, and we conduct various trade seminars/conferences focused on specific industries, geographic areas or on best practices in exporting. Additionally, we provide U.S. companies with promotional opportunities to introduce their products and services worldwide.

We offer a unique internship opportunity for those interested in pursuing a career in international business that:

1. provides the student with opportunities to learn and engage in professional business development assistance that we provide to U.S. exporters;

2. enables the student to creatively link their academic studies and skills with the export business development assistance we provide to our client companies; and

3. provides the student with in-depth knowledge of the organizations, programs and resource base for international trade development.

Throughout the internship, the student will have the opportunity to work on activities that include:

  • Helping client companies assess and address challenges in export business development.
  • Providing market research and customized information to clients.
  • Communicating directly with clients and our international offices in day-to-day client assistance.
  • Working collaboratively with our business development partner organizations to assist clients.
  • Working together with USCS Portland staff in the development, promotion, and execution of international trade seminars, webinars, and conferences.
  • Outreaching to clients for seminars, webinars, and other international trade development events.
