Education Technology Fall 2018 Newsletter

The U.S. Commercial Service is the export promotion agency of the U.S. government and operates under the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration. We have over 100 offices in the United States and are in over 75 countries, with a presence at the U.S. embassies and consulates throughout the world. Our Trade Specialists work with U.S. companies and industry leaders to provide market information that caters to the unique needs within the education IT sector.

The Global Education Team continuously works with education technology firms and industry associations to understand trends, buying power, decision-making processes, and issues within each country. We counsel U.S. companies on how to promote and sell their goods and services abroad. The below events have been organized with the purpose to facilitate trade and increase sales for U.S. companies.

Market Spotlight- China

Educational technology (EdTech) is a new and innovative sector with enormous potential. Products and services offered by EdTech companies should not only involve students, but also involve teachers and parents. The most popular products offered by EdTech companies are mobile device apps.

With the proliferation of EdTech in both public and private schools, many institutions have adopted new policies to better accommodate new technologies. For example, many schools lack funding for educational technology and have adopted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy. Other services that fall under the EdTech umbrella are open source resources such as “open textbooks,” which are distributed under an open copyright license and can be freely used in print, e-book, or audio format.

Fast Facts China:

  • $450+ billion market by 2020. Favorable government policy set ICT infrastructure and related services ready in public schools. The budget for ICT & EdTech in public K12 schools is over $40 billion.
  • World’s largest middle class – 109 million Chinese with wealth between $50,000 and $500,000 (U.S. at 92 million).
  • Over 30% of family spending is on education services and products.
