City Profile: Ahmedabad


Ahmedabad is the 6th largest city in India and 27th in the world. It was the temporary capital of State of Gujarat, situated in western part of India. The place has been the epicenter of many developments that have taken place in our country. The city is an amalgam of both traditions and modernization with flamboyant culture and flourishing industries co existing. The Homeland of Mahatma is famous for its magnificent architecture and thriving industries. It will be an unforgettable experience to visit this city.

The city was named after Sultan Ahmed Shah who founded this place in 1411AD. The Sultan graced the city with architecturally splendid monuments which are now associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Ahmedabad has combined contrasts with contradictions. Ahmedabad is second largest city in the Western India. Even the textile industries here are the second largest in the country. An intriguing combination of ancient and modern exists side-by side here as the many Indo-Saracenic mosques.

Ahmedabad is truly a triumph city which has lived a glorious past and continues to hold its old-world charm with strong headed visions of the future and forging into space age. The world class educational institutes for studying management, engineering and advertising are also located in the city which makes it an education hub of India.

Public Transportation
Unmetered auto and taxis are the best form of communication within Ahmedabad. Rickshaws can be hired for shorter distances.

Ahmedabad has a warm dry climate, except for rainy seasons. The best time to visit Ahmedabad is from October to March.

Summers (March to May) are extremely hot with an average mercury level of 36°C with extreme sometimes touching up to 45°C and tourists seldom go out for sightseeing in April and May.

Winters (November to February) offer a mild windy cool climate. It is very pleasant and good for all tourist activities. In winter the average temperature ranges in thirties.

Monsoons (June to October) is rainy season with medium to heavy showers.

October to March months are cool with pleasant atmosphere and perfect for outings and participations in celebrations. June to September are usually typically avoided by visitors, due to uncertainty in heavy rains. April to June months extremely hot and tourists are cautioned for dehydration problems and sunstrokes.

Reaching Ahmedabad by Air

The Ahmedabad airport is located 10 kms north of the city and has both domestic and international flight connections. Private coach and taxis can be hired from the airport terminal to reach the city.

Reaching Ahmedabad by Rail

Ahmedabad has direct train services to major cities in India. Western Railways provided access to Ahmedabad.

Reaching Ahmedabad by Road

Ahmedabad has got good highways connecting it to all major places and other states. Inter-state buses of different states of India also provide services to and from Ahmedabad.

Calico Museum

The Calico museum is one of the best textile museums in the world, with rate collection of textiles from the 17th century onwards. Old weaving machines, exquisite fabrics, brocades and embroidery are on display in the museum.

Sabarmati Ashram

This quiet and peaceful retreat was setup by Gandhiji in 1915 as a Satyagraha Ashram on the bank of the river Sabarmati. Hriday Kunj the simple cottage where Gandhiji lived in and now a national monument and preserved as it used to be in his life time.

Adalaj Step Well

The steps descent five stories, passing beams, columns and brackets that are elaborately carved with geometric, floral and animal designs.

Siddi Saiyed Mosque

Enclosed by the pleasant garden in the center of the city this small mosque is known for its delicate and exquisite trellises and stone window tracery.
