December 4, 2018 / 5th Annual Alumni Event of APO
U.S. Embassy Prague hosted the fifth annual Alumni Event of Academy of Patient Organizations (APO). The event attracted almost one hundred participants, two thirds of which represented patient organizations participating in APO activities. Ambassador Stephen B. King highlighted the importance of patient-centric care, emphasizing that the patient is central to any healthcare system. Jakub Dvoracek, Executive Director of Association of Innovative Pharmaceutical companies (AIFP), which helped found the APO and continues strong support, thanked patient organizations´ representatives for their selfless activity in support of the various organizations. Other distinguished speakers – including director of State Institute for Drug Control Irena Storova, Deputy Minister of Health Helena Rognerova, senator Lubomir Kantor, Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Club Simona Zabranska, and prof. Jan Svihovec representing the Czech Medical Society – also noted the tireless support and feedback from patient organizations which have become more of a professional partner in recent years also thanks to APO.
November 19, 2018 / Perspectives of Innovative Medical Treatment in Czech Republic
U.S. Embassy Prague U.S. Commercial Service in cooperation with the NGO Revenium, organized a seminar “Perspectives on Innovative Treatment in the Czech Republic”. Ambassador Stephen B. King opened the event which featured presentations from top Czech healthcare stakeholders including Adam Vojtech, Minister of Health; David Smehlik, Deputy Chairman of the General Insurance Company (VZP), Irena Storova, Director of the State Institute for Drug Control (SUKL), Jana Prausova, Chairwoman of the Czech Oncology Society; Martina Vasakova, Chairwoman of the Czech Pneumology Society; and Petra Adamkova, Director of Onko Unie. The seminar highlighted the importance of cooperation and open discussion among all stakeholders and discussed ways to allow for timely market access for innovative life-saving medicines.

November 5, 2018 / Commercial Counselor Participates in Biogen Celebrations Commercial Counselor Christina Sharkey took part in a seminar and 40th anniversary celebration of U.S. biotechnology company Biogen at the premises of Charles University Karolinum historical building. The seminar included presentations on the history of biotechnology in medicine, highlighting the treatment of neurological disease including multiple sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy. Distinguished speakers included Tomas Zima, Dean of Charles University; Jan Konvalinka, Vice-Dean of Charles University; Irena Storova, Director of State Institute for Drug Control; Eva Havrdova, Professor of Neurology at the First Faculty of Medicine, General Faculty Hospital; Jana Haberlova, Pediatric Neurologist, Motol Hospital; Vaclav Novotny, Biogen CEE Regional Managing Director; and Christina Sharkey.

October 10, 2018 / Launch of New Ford Focus in the Czech Republic
On October 10, 2018, Ambassador Steven B. King hosted the launch of new Ford Focus in the Czech Republic. Ford Focus is one of World’s favorite family hatchbacks with more than 16 million models sold and the title of world’s best-selling car in 2012 and 2013. This new model is expected to follow in the successful footsteps of its predecessors. Ambassador King highlighted the value that Ford brings to the Czech economy by sourcing auto parts for billions of U.S. dollars from Czech manufacturers. Amko Leenarts, Chief Designer at Ford of Europe who contributed to new Ford Focus design, also participated in the event along with Jan Laube, General Director of Ford in the Czech Republic. „The New Focus is much spacier, which is appreciated by drivers as well as passangers“ said Jan Laube. He continued, „For our corporate customers, the size of the cargo space of the has grown by a whole 118 liters from the previous generation model, which makes Focus rank among the absolutely most practical fleet cars in the market.“ Ford Motor Company is a multinational company active worldwide with headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. On August 23, 2018, Commercial Counselor Christina Sharkey took part in the “Territorial Workshop USA” seminar organized by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in the Czech Republic for Czech companies interested in the U.S. market. Sharkey presented on American-Czech Bilateral relations, particularly trade issues and opportunities, and highlighted the United States as a top destination for potential foreign investors. “The United States offers the largest consumer market on earth with a GDP of $20 trillion and 325 million people. Free trade agreements with 20 other countries provide enhanced access to hundreds of millions of additional consumers.” Christina Sharkey stated. June 20 – 22, 2018 / Czech Delegation at SelectUSA Summit
On June 20 – 22, 2018, U.S. Commercial Service Prague and the Central Bohemia Government jointly led a delegation to fifth SelectUSA Investment Summit in Washington, D.C. This was the first delegation of Czech companies to attend the Summit. During the event, delegates had the opportunity to learn about the U.S. investment climate and to meet with senior representatives from U.S. states, the federal government, as well as other international companies. “SelectUSA is the premier event for international companies seeking new opportunities in the United States,” Secretary Ross said. “We have the most open and dynamic market in the world buoyed by the pro-growth policies of President Trump. There has been no better time to invest here. We have more than 3,000 delegates from 66 countries attending this year’s Summit, including delegates from 15 countries that are new this year. I’m pleased to welcome the foreign investment community and announce $600 million in new projects this year.”Secretary Ross announced that the 2019 SelectUSA Investment Summit will be held in Washington, D.C. from June 10-12, 2019.
June 12, 2018 / Johnson & Johnson New Offices Inauguration
On June 12, 2018, U.S. Ambassador Steven B. King delivered congratulatory remarks at the official opening of the new Johnson & Johnson office in Jinonice. Ms. Erin Champlin, Vice President, Johnson & Johnson Global Services, was the featured speaker at the opening ceremony which attracted Czech and international officials, community representatives as well as Johnson & Johnson employees. The new facility will co-locate Johnson & Johnson´s Consumer, Medical Devices and Pharmaceuticals businesses, Customer Logistics Services and the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) regional Global Services Center, under one roof with a staff of 1,100. There are plans to add an additional 300 staff in the next few years.
June 5, 2018 / Role of Beta-Glucan in Human and Animal Health Seminar
Commercial Counselor Helen L. Peterson opened a seminar “Role of Beta-glucan in human and animal health”. The presentation was delivered by Dr. Vaclav Vetvicka, Ph.D. Mr. Vetvicka is a professor at the University of Louisville, Kentucky; a president of International Society for Glucan Research (ISGR); and co-author of more than 150 original papers, several review articles, and three patents. The seminar attendees included doctors, pharmacists, vets, and other experts. The event was held in cooperation with Transfer Point Inc. Transfer Point Inc., located in Little Mountain, SC, is a privately held dietary supplements company. The company’s products are sold directly to consumers as well as through independent retail outlets and health care practitioners including nutritionists, naturopaths, chiropractors, physicians, and dentists in the U.S. Transfer Point Inc. products have been available in the Czech market since 2008 through their Czech partner K.R. On June 4, U.S. Ambassador Steve King participated in the launch of Keller Williams Czech Republic, a new U.S. real estate company entering the Czech market. Keller Williams Czech Republic is a master franchisor of Keller Williams International. Around 150 real estate professionals and other guests participated in the launch event that was held at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador in Prague. Austin, Texas-based Keller Williams is the world's largest real estate franchise by agent count. The company has more than 950 offices and 181,000 associates worldwide. In 2018, Training magazine inducted Keller Williams into its Hall of Fame of top training organizations across all industries around the world.

April 10, 2018 / Whitford Corporation seminar on fluoropolymer coatings
On April 10, 2018, U.S. Ambassador Steve King opened a seminar organized by Whitford Corporation to introduce the company’s fluoropolymer coatings to the Czech market. The Ambassador also welcomed the company’s new collaborative venture with the University of West Bohemia. Whitford Corporation’s Stephen Butler, Global Business Director, and Petr Kavalíř, Vice Director, University of West Bohemia also delivered opening remarks. Whitford Corporation’s fluoropolymer coatings provide dry lubrication, low friction, easy release, wear, chemical and corrosion resistance in countless industrial applications.

March 14 – 16, 2018 / BCIU Smart Cities Business Mission in Prague
From March 14 – 16, 2018, U.S. Commercial Service Prague worked with the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU) to bring to Prague a unique business mission of U.S. companies active in Smart Cities arena. Five U.S. companies – Mastercard, Microsoft, Viasat, Visa, Winncom Technologies - participated in the mission. Mission participants had an opportunity to discuss Smart Cities with experts from the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Regional Development, CzechInvest, Czech smart cities clusters, and representatives of the Confederation of Industry. Mission participants also visited the University Centre for Energy Efficient Buildings (UCEEB), an independent institute of the Czech Technical University in Prague. The mission resulted in a number of fruitful Smart Cities discussions and the beginning of a dialogue between U.S. companies and the Czech Republic in this area.
January 29, 2018 / Ambassador King meets Indiana Secretary of Commerce
On January 29, U.S. Ambassador Stephen King met with Secretary of Commerce from the State of Indiana Jim Schellinger during the Secretary’s visit to Prague. Indiana Commerce Secretary Schellinger was visiting the Czech Republic to build closer relations with the Czech government and business community through increased trade and investment. Ambassador King welcomed Indiana’s interest in the Czech Republic saying, “I am very pleased by Indiana Commerce Secretary Schellinger’s visit to Prague and his interest in furthering business and people-to-people ties between the State of Indiana and the Czech Republic. These are two of my priority areas in which I hope to see greater interaction between our two countries.” The Ambassador welcomed additional visitors from Indiana especially during this year’s centennial celebrations of the U.S.-Czech bilateral relationship.
