Panel: Making Rain: Financing Sustainability around the Globe

Session: Wednesday, February 11 @ 9:30

Shari Friedman is the Senior Strategy Officer for Climate Business at the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. Since 1994, she has worked in climate change and energy in both the private and public sector.

Ms. Friedman worked at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. During that time, she evaluated the impact of carbon prices on businesses and industries such as iron and steel, cement, pulp and paper as well as wind, solar, insulation and motors. From 1998 to 2001, Ms. Friedman was part of the U.S. negotiating team for the Kyoto Protocol, focusing on rules for international emissions trading, particularly the Clean Development Mechanism.

In 2001, Ms. Friedman joined Environmental Enterprises Assistance Fund (EEAF), which managed for-profit private equity funds for environmental businesses.  She was responsible for capitalization of the organization and private equity funds as well as for strategic direction for new investment vehicles. She also managed the group’s participation in greenhouse gas trading schemes.

Ms. Friedman left EEAF to create Opus4, which became ASF Associates. ASF Associates provided strategic and technical insight on climate, energy, clean air and small business development. Clients included SRI fund managers, private energy businesses, think tanks, U.S. government agencies, universities and NGOs.

Ms. Friedman joined the IFC in September 2013. She helps develop the corporation’s strategy to increase its climate business, including investments that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as increase resiliency to the effects of climate change.

Ms. Friedman has a Masters in Public Policy from Georgetown University and a BA from Tufts University. She is trained in solar PV installation and biodiesel production.  Ms. Friedman can be contacted directly at sfriedman1@ifc.org, (202) 473-1806.
