Panel: Powering the Continent: Financing Clean Tech Deployment in Africa

Over the last 10 years, Dr. Malhotra has fulfilled his passion for building his vision into a successful global company in the Cleantech sector. As the founder of Oorja Protonics, he was worked with world leaders whether they were customers, strategic partners, his team or investors.

While leading Oorja and shaping it into a Global fuel cell leader focused on Distributed Generation, Telecom Power and Industrial Markets, Dr. Malhotra was involved in establishing strategic alliances for product development, marketing, sales and distribution of Oorja’s fuel cells with Toyota Tsusho ($70 Billion Toyota subsidiary), QAFAC (A Qatar Petroleum Subsidiary), USTDA and Plessey ($6 Billion Telecom System Integrator). Dr. Malhotra also secured multiple commercial contracts from Nissan North America, McDonalds distributors, US Foods, Unified Grocers, NUMMI (A JV between Toyota and GM) among others. At Oorja, he raised almost $32 Miliion in equity financing from leading VCs such as Sequoia, DAG Ventures, Spring Ventures and MinxXin Growth Fund. Aside from US, Oorja had operations and sales in Japan, China, South Africa and Mexico.

Prior to founding Oorja, he worked at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers as Energy Advisor for the Venture Partners on potential investments in Clean Energy and Materials (Nano-­‐scale and other novel technologies).

He worked as a senior executive in Engineering, Product Development, Sales and Business Development at H Power, a pioneer in Clean Energy focusing on Hydrogen and Natural Gas-­‐powered fuel cells. At H Power, he was involved in establishing and fostering strategic alliances with leading global entities such as Mitsui, HydroQuebec Capital, CMS Energy, Singapore Transit Authority, and Rural Energy Cooperatives (Touchstone Energy). Aside from a strategic equity investment, Rural Energy Cooperatives also granted a contract for $81 Million to H Power -- THE LARGEST SINGLE CONTRACT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF FUEL CELLS. As Vice President of Business Development, Sales and Marketing at H Power, he was part of the team that executed a successful IPO raising $100 Million in August, 2000.

After completing his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, he worked as a Post-­‐doctoral fellow at the renowned Lawrence Berkeley National Labs on electrochemical storage systems.

Dr. Malhotra has Authored 7 Patents and 40+ Publications in various fields of energy technology and materials.
