Panel: The Future of Clean Tech Venture Capital: How Corporations Are the Newest Funding Source

John Balbach is an experienced investor, operating executive and policy-maker with a twenty-five year track record financing and scaling companies and investment funds in the resource efficiency, advanced energy, broadband, wireless and media sectors, with a focus on infrastructure.

He is currently Managing Partner of Adapt Capital, providing special situation investment advisory for family offices, HNWI and infrastructure funds, and a Senior Advisor to the Foresight Group, expanding their $2B clean energy platform into North America.

Prior, John was founding Managing Director of CleanPath Ventures, an advanced energy project fund with $50 million in revolving project equity capacity towards a goal of $800 million in project equity value, where he spearheaded the platform’s capital and fund formation, aligned equity syndication, debt and tax equity financing partnerships, and sourced over five gigawatts of investment opportunities globally.

Prior to CleanPath, he served as Managing Partner of the Cleantech Group, which he grew from a team of 5 to over 40 and expanded operations and offices from NA to EU, MENA, India and China. His teams facilitated financings of over $1.8 billion for advanced energy companies and projects. His asset advisory unit advised institutional investors – including sovereign wealth funds, pensions, endowments and family offices - on asset allocation and market adoption strategies. His corporate and government unit advised companies and governments globally on clean technology best practices and investment strategies.

He has led capital raises targeting over $500 million including fund placements, early, growth and secondary offerings as well as spearheaded a number of acquisitions, restructurings and wind-downs across the clean technology, broadband, wireless and media sectors.

John has also served as an officer and head of corporate development of a public broadband wireless company; head of marketing of a wireless joint venture by Intel, AT&T, IBM; and founding team of a $200 million telecom infrastructure venture capital firm (Flashcom, MobileStar).

Prior to his private sector career, Mr. Balbach held positions in the United States Senate focused on national security, international infrastructure and nation rebuilding, including the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Staff Director, Congressional Task Force on Afghanistan. He subsequently co-founded three international agencies; the Gorbachev Foundation, the State of the World Forum, and Global Alliances, an advisor to world leaders including President Vicente Fox and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
