Belgium is a highly developed and densely populated country centrally located at the “heart” of Europe. It is one of the founding members of the European Union, and Brussels, its capital, is also the capital of Europe.
The standard of living in Belgium is among the highest in the world, as it boasts excellent food, housing, health-care, education and infrastructure, as well as high productivity and low poverty. It also is a significant economic partner to the U.S. with bilateral trade amounting to over $51 billion in 2014 and expected to grow another 10% by 2015. The United States and Belgium are also significant investment partners. The U.S. is Belgium’s 5th largest trading partner overall and its most important trading partner outside of the EU. Foreign direct investment of Belgium in the US reached $88.7 billion in 2012, making Belgium the 8th largest investor in the US.
