u.s. commercial service honors local companies for export leadership

The South Carolina office of the U.S. Commercial Service launches new program to prepare companies for international success and recognizes local exporters for export achievement.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – Just ten short months ago, the office of the U.S. Commercial Service (CS) decided to do something unprecedented. The 4-person staff, led by Director Dorette Coetsee, had a vision to help clients take their export sales to the next level. That vision led the team to launch the Export Leadership Academy and on November 14, 2017, the inaugural class will be recognized in a graduation ceremony at the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

Initially launching as a pilot program, the mission of the Export Leadership Academy is to develop, grow and manage your company’s international sales.

“We wanted to provide a more stimulating curriculum for companies that have an earnest desire to increase their international presence,” said Coetsee. “The Export Leadership Academy (ELA) affords companies the opportunity to experience real-world scenarios, while also providing direct access to experts that will assist with the design and implementation of their export plan. South Carolina exports exceeded $31 billion last year…the primary goal of this program is to increase the number of successful exporters and continue to keep South Carolina as one of the top exporters in the U.S.”

The 2017 ELA class consists of six participants from five local companies. Requirements for graduation were comprised of all aspects of including a company assessment using the International Expansion Blueprint (IEB), which is a custom methodology exclusively created by the CS, to understanding the importance of an international web presence, financial considerations and export compliance. On graduation day, the participants will get the opportunity to take everything they have learned and present to an audience of District Export Council representatives and the U.S. Commercial Service November 14th.

In addition to recognizing the ELA graduates, the U.S. Commercial Service will also honor three firms with the coveted Export Achievement Award. The Export Achievement Award was created by the CS to recognize small and medium-sized enterprises that have successfully entered the international marketplace for the first time or that have successfully entered a new foreign market with CS assistance.

Adams Scrap Recycling, a recycling facility in the Greenville area, entered into an agreement with Steelmont, a global trading and logistics organization, to sell their scrap metal for an estimated $10 million annually in sales to Steelmont’s facilities around the world, including Dubai, United Kingdom, and China. Adams Recycling began working with Steelmont in 2015 after participating in the Bureau of International Recycling Convention in Dubai through South Carolina Department of Commerce’s SCOPE program. Adams signed the deal in 2017, following two years of negotiations, as well as receiving consulting assistance from the U.S. Commercial Service and South Carolina Department of Commerce.

Dust Solutions, manufacturer of dust suppression systems, was embarking on a major project at the Port of Riga, in Latvia. The Port of Riga is a major shipping port for the country’s coal exports and the government wanted to ensure that the neighborhoods surrounding the port are not adversely impacted by dust and debris from the coal that will be stockpiled in the open. Dust Solutions (DSI) partnered with a local engineering firm, NK Technologies to submit a bid on this project. With market research and counseling from the U.S. Commercial Service, as well as government advocacy support, DSI and NK Technologies were awarded the contract valued at between $500,000 to $1 million, resulting in another successful export sale for DSI whose exports now represent about 60% of total sales.

Global Infection Control Consultants, LLC (GICC), has conducted specialized contamination assessments in over 4,000 buildings in 20+ countries and written protocols for solving critical contamination problems in a multitude of applications. The U.S. Commercial Service has been advising, assisting and providing referrals to GICC on general export topics and country-specific market research including a listing of export documentation requirements for Nigeria, and access to CS market research on the healthcare technologies sector. GICC reports today some impressive export results, including:

  • A first shipment of some 30,000 gallons to rice growers in Nigeria, with anticipated orders over the next 4-5 years.
  • A product launch held in the Philippines, which will be used on a variety of crops including coconut palms, pineapple, strawberries. The total projected volume over a five-year period could exceed 5 million gallons.
  • A contract signed with buyers in China for use in meat processing industry and in personal hygiene products.
  • Negotiations are underway with one of the largest poultry producers in the Middle East, located in Saudi Arabia.
