The United States and Guatemala enjoy a burgeoning trade relationship, which has been strengthened by the U.S.-Central America- Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). The United States is Guatemala’s largest economic trading partner accounting for nearly 40% of Guatemala’s trade.

Why Guatemala?

  • U.S. exports to Guatemala were US$5.8 billion in 2015, nearly 105% higher than the level in 2005 before CAFTA-DR entered into force.
  • As of January 1, 2015, 100 percent of U.S. consumer and industrial goods enter the CAFTA-DR countries duty free.
  • With a population of around 15 million, Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America and accounts for more than one third of the region’s GDP.
  • A key component to Guatemala’s economy is remittances. In 2015, remittances grew by 13.5%
