The United States is both Costa Rica’s largest trading partner and largest foreign direct investor, with a trade surplus of nearly $1.7 billion. With 40% of Costa Rica’s imports coming from the United States it is a very receptive market to U.S. goods. U.S. merchandise exports to Costa Rica reached US$6.1 billion in 2015.

Why Costa Rica?

  • The U.S. - Central America- Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement eliminated most tariffs making trade with Costa Rica cheaper and more accessible to U.S. companies.
  • With no controls on capital flows, exporters are only subject to local taxes when doing business in Costa Rica.
  • With so much of Costa Rica’s investments and imports coming from the US it is an established market for exporters.
