Automotive OEMs and Parts Industry
The Japanese automotive industry is the leading industry of the country. 5.5 million people, about 10% of the nationwide workforce has an automotive related job in Japan. As of November 2015, approximately 1.5 trillion JPY (about $148.5 billion), or about 20% of Japanese total exports are automotive-related products. As a result of global demand of Japanese OEMs, they localized their production lines to each countries and domestic productions has been decreasing. The total domestic automobile production declined 3.7 million units and total overseas production increased 14.2 million units over the past 20 years. There has been tremendous change and upheaval in the Japanese auto industry in recent years. Due to increasing global demand for environmentally friendly production as well as increased safety concerns, cutting edge technologies including EV, hydrogen fuel and autonomous vehicles have grown in the Japanese market. The government of Japan aims to have a functional autonomous vehicle transportation system by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As a result, autonomous vehicle related technology has become a high priority among Japanese OEMs.  U.S. auto parts manufacturers with technologies in the areas of "next-generation" transportation systems, transportation safety, traffic accident reduction, theft-resistance, and electronic components should consider entering this market.

Motorcycle Industry
Motorcycle sales in the Japanese market have been declining, with production hitting 348,125 units in 2015, representing about 12% decrease from 2014. OEMs have been localizing their production lines in overseas markets, especially in South East Asia. U.S. motorcycle manufacturers with cutting edge technology will remain competitive and find ample opportunity in the Japanese market.
