Location/Date: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 04/19/2017 - 04/19/2017
Event Summary:
Much of the current focus of healthcare delivery in Africa is on traditional and visible factors like HIV and malaria. However, changes in lifestyle and a growing middle class are making non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes big issues among populations. Rapid urbanization and increased Westernization of lifestyles among the middle classes is causing an increase in the risk factors that cause non-communicable diseases. Increased smoking, less active lifestyles, higher consumption of sodium and alcohol have contributed significantly to diseases that were once confined to industrialized nations.

Healthcare in Africa differs widely, depending on the country and also the region – those living in urban areas are more likely to receive better healthcare services than those in rural or remote regions.

Many communities lack clean water and proper sanitation facilities, particularly in rural areas. This means that illnesses caused by poor hygiene, such as cholera and diarrhea, are common in some countries.
