MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

According to a recent BMI report published in 2016, Romania's defense budget is expected to increase, in both absolute terms and as a share of GDP, in the next five years. This growth will be driven by the rising tensions in the Black Sea region, as Russia's stance in Ukraine and Moldova is prompting Romania to speed up the process of modernizing its armed forces. Modernization will initially focus on procurement of new equipment and strengthening the capabilities for the army; creating opportunities for local suppliers, which manufacture a range of equipment in the ground segment. OVER THE LONGER TERM, PROCUREMENT OF MORE TECHNOLOGICALLY ADVANCED EQUIPMENT, SUCH AS AIRCRAFT IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE, ALLOWING FOREIGN COMPANIES TO CAPTURE A GREATER SHARE OF THE MARKET.

With Romania's economy picking up, and regional tensions set to remain elevated, Bucharest is focusing on strengthening its armed forces' capabilities and level of preparedness. This process will involve new procurement in sub-segments such as ISR equipment, armored vehicles, artillery and air defense. A substantial share of the budget that is left after operational expenses have been covered will be directed towards Romania's defense industry in the medium term, as many local companies retain manufacturing capabilities for these types of products.
