According to Business Market International Research (BMI), Turkey's defense budget will continue increasing over the next five years. This will be focused primarily on the country's long term strategy to develop self-sufficiency in defense and arms manufacturing. This represents opportunities for international companies willing to enter into joint ventures and facilitate technological transfer, but limits procurement opportunities.

DEFENSE MANUFACTURING/EXPORTS

Since the 1970s, Turkey has been committed to the development of an independent domestic defense manufacturing capability and has progressively been reducing its dependence on foreign manufacturers. This strategy has created a burgeoning defense manufacturing capability resulting in a surplus in defense exports in the past decade Turkey's main exports are land platforms, one of the country's most developed defense sectors. But in the past years it has also continued to improve the performance of its weapons/ammunitions/rockets/missiles sector and ranked 14th in 2014 amongst the top fifty arms exporting countries. It essentially exports to the UAE, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, but has also more recently expanded its arms trade into Kosovo, Malaysia and Tunisia.

DEFENSE IMPORTS

As regional threats continue to increase, Turkey's defense needs will continue to outpace her domestic defense manufacturing capability, particularly in the aerospace industry, placing a high priority on the upgrade and modernization of the Turkish air force.

In 2014, defense imports placed Turkey 3rd amongst defense importers. Defense imports come mainly from the US, Spain and Italy. In recent years, Germany, Israel and the Netherlands are also increasingly participating in the Turkish defense imports. Turkey will continue to rely on imports for the upgrade of its air force in the coming years, especially as the regional threats increase.
