According to BUSINESS MONITOR INTERNATIONAL (BMI), The UAE ranks among the top 15 defense spenders in the world. Defense expenditure as a proportion of GDP has remained high in recent years, reflecting the elevated threat to the country's security environment posed by Islamist militancy across the MENA region, and the persistent risk of conflict with Iran. Economic prosperity, coupled with a lack of organized political opposition domestically, has enabled the UAE government to keep defense spending high on a global comparison, despite the recent budget reductions implemented amid lower oil prices.

The UAE remains a key ally of the US in the Middle East. The UAE, a major importer of US military equipment, sees defense purchases from the US as a way of strengthening Washington's commitment to protecting the country in the event of an attack. The US, meanwhile is working to build up capacities of allied armed forces in the region. As such, we except imports of US military products to the UAE continue over our forecast period and beyond - with particular focus on missiles systems, cybersecurity equipment and aircraft.
