Leading Sectors for U.S. Exports to ASEAN

The ASEAN market is represented by the ten ASEAN nations – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

ASEAN countries, taken together, rank 4th after Canada, Mexico and China as a goods export market for the United States, and the United States is the third largest trading partner for ASEAN.

Two-way trade between the United States and ASEAN was $216 billion in 2014. The United States exported $79 billion in goods and more than $23 billion in services to ASEAN in 2014, and recorded a $7 billion surplus in services trade with ASEAN.

U.S. exports to the ASEAN countries account for 5.0% of overall U.S. exports in 2013. According to the Department of Commerce, U.S. Goods and Services exports to ASEAN supported an estimated 370,000 jobs in 2014.

U.S. Investment in the give major ASEAN states, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines totaled $224.46 billion and exceed that invested on a combined basis in the Greater China ($149.08 billion) – including China ($65.77 billion), Hong Kong ($66.24 billion), and Taiwan ($17.07 billion).

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2014 were: Electrical Machinery ($16.6 billion), Machinery ($10.1 billion), Aircraft ($9.7 billion), Optic and Medical Instruments ($4.7 billion), and Mineral Fuel and Oil ($4.2 billion).

U.S. domestic exports of agricultural products to ASEAN countries totaled $11.4 billion in 2014. Leading categories include: soybeans ($1.9 billion), dairy products ($1.3 billion), wheat ($1.3 billion), soybean meal ($1.1 billion), and cotton ($935 million).

U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI stock) in ASEAN was $226.0 billion in 2014, up 13.3% from 2013.
